What is Nose Surgery?
Nose surgery or rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to reshape the nose to improve its appearance or function.
It can be performed for various reasons, including correcting a deviated septum, repairing a broken nose, or altering the shape of the nose for cosmetic purposes.
Symptoms
The following symptoms may indicate the need for nose surgery:
Difficulty breathing: If you have trouble breathing through your nose due to a deviated septum or other structural issues, nose surgery may be recommended.
Cosmetic concerns: If you are unhappy with the size, shape or overall appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty can help.
Trauma: If you have experienced a nose injury that has left your nose crooked or misshapen, surgery may be necessary to repair it.
Treatment Procedure
The nose surgery procedure typically involves the following steps:
Anesthesia: The first step in nose surgery is to administer anesthesia. General anesthesia is most commonly used, but local anesthesia with sedation may also be an option. Your surgeon will discuss which option is best for you.
Incisions: Once you are under anesthesia, your surgeon will make incisions inside your nostrils or across the base of your nose, depending on the type of procedure you are having.
Reshaping: Your surgeon will then reshape your nose by removing or rearranging cartilage and bone. If you are having surgery to correct breathing problems, your surgeon may also straighten your septum or remove nasal polyps.
Closing the incisions: After the reshaping is complete, your surgeon will close the incisions with dissolvable stitches.
Recovery: You will need to stay in the hospital for a few hours after surgery to allow the anesthesia to wear off. You will likely experience some swelling and discomfort in the days and weeks following the procedure, but this should gradually subside. You will need to avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks and avoid blowing your nose for several weeks after the procedure.
